Traveller making a contactless card payment during a trip

Wise Review for Travel: Fees, Safety, Limits and When It Makes Sense

Short answer: Wise can be useful for international travel when you want a multi-currency account, visible conversion quotes and a debit card for everyday spending. It is not a universal replacement for a credit card, local cash or a second payment route. The right decision depends on your country of residence, current Wise pricing, ATM use, card-acceptance needs, deposits and how much redundancy your trip requires.

Updated 25 October 2026. Wise fees, exchange rates, card availability, ATM allowances, supported currencies, account limits, card networks and terms vary by country and can change. Check the live Wise pages for your account and issuing country before departure.

Wise travel review at a glance

Question Practical answer What to verify
What is Wise? A multi-currency account and debit-card service for holding, converting, sending and spending money. Eligibility, supported currencies and country-specific terms.
Who benefits most? Travellers crossing borders or paying in more than one currency who want app visibility and card controls. Whether your existing bank already offers equal or better foreign-spend terms.
What is the exchange-rate model? Wise says it uses the mid-market rate as a benchmark and shows a separate conversion fee. The live quote for your exact currency pair and transaction.
Is it a credit card? No. The Wise card is a debit card linked to your Wise account. Deposits, car hire, hotel holds, rewards, insurance and purchase protection.
Are ATM withdrawals free? Only within the allowance and terms for your issuing country; the ATM owner can still add a fee. Your current Cards-area allowance and the ATM screen.
Can it be your only travel payment? It is safer as one part of a payment setup. Second card, emergency cash, offline contact details and account access.
Wise multi-currency card

Best for transparent app-managed currency spending and a debit card that can be frozen or monitored. Wise is not a universal “best travel card”: country availability, fees, ATM terms and credit-card protections differ.

What is Wise for travel?

Wise lets eligible customers hold and convert supported currencies, send or receive money where available, and spend with a physical or digital debit card. It can reduce the friction of moving between currencies, but it does not remove every cost or guarantee acceptance at every merchant.

  • Multi-currency balances: hold supported currencies and convert when it suits your trip.
  • Visible quotes: see the amount, rate and fee before confirming a conversion or payment where Wise provides that information.
  • Physical and digital card options: use the format that suits your route, while keeping a physical fallback for offline or incompatible terminals.
  • App controls: review transactions, manage limits and freeze or unfreeze cards.
  • International transfers: useful for some travellers and remote workers, but separate transfer pricing and recipient rules apply.

Wise is a financial product, not a travel insurance policy, credit facility or guarantee that a hotel or car-hire company will accept a debit card deposit.

What are Wise fees and exchange rates?

Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange-rate benchmark and displays a separate fee for conversion. That can be easier to compare than an opaque foreign-exchange markup, but the fee is not identical for every currency pair, funding method, account country or transaction.

Cost area How to think about it What to check live
Currency conversion A variable fee can apply when you convert or spend from a different currency balance. Exact currency pair, amount, fee and recipient amount.
Card spending Wise advertises spending at the mid-market rate with low conversion fees, not a blanket “free abroad” promise. Whether you already hold the local currency and the quote shown before payment.
Card order Issuing and delivery charges vary by issuing country. Local card price, delivery time and express option.
Adding money Funding method can change the fee. Bank transfer, debit card, credit card and other top-up costs.
ATM withdrawals Wise and the ATM operator can charge separate fees. Your allowance, excess fee and the ATM’s own surcharge.

Current US pricing snapshot checked 25 October 2026: Wise’s US card-fees page displayed no subscription fee, a US$9 card-order fee, express delivery from US$11.58 and a US$5 replacement fee. It also displayed no Wise ATM fee up to a combined US$250 per calendar month, followed by US$1.95 plus 1.95% on each withdrawal after the allowance. This is a US example, not a global Wise tariff.

Price one realistic trip before you leave: one card purchase, one conversion, one ATM withdrawal and one hotel or accommodation deposit. The live quote is more useful than a generic percentage copied from another country’s review.

How do Wise ATM withdrawals, cash and dynamic currency conversion work?

Wise can be useful for occasional cash, but “fee-free ATM withdrawals” always needs a country-specific qualifier. The Wise fee and the ATM owner’s surcharge are separate, and the machine may offer a poor conversion through dynamic currency conversion (DCC).

Situation Practical response Why it matters
ATM asks whether to charge in your home currency Usually choose the local currency and decline the ATM’s conversion. The ATM operator may apply its own exchange rate and markup.
Wise allowance is nearly used Check the current Cards-area limit before withdrawing. Excess fees can apply after the monthly or calendar-month allowance.
ATM displays a surcharge Cancel if the fee is unacceptable and try a bank ATM or another location. Wise cannot necessarily remove the ATM owner’s fee.
Cash-only vegan venue or market Carry a small local-currency buffer. Card acceptance is not universal, even in tourist areas.
Card or phone is lost Keep emergency cash and a second payment route separately. App controls are less useful if you lose the device and your only card.

For a vegan trip, carry enough local cash for one arrival meal, water, a short taxi or bus ride, and a fallback route to your accommodation. You do not need to carry your entire food budget in cash.

What Wise card formats and acceptance should you expect?

The Wise card is a debit card connected to your Wise account. Depending on your account and region, you may use a physical card, digital cards or a mobile wallet, but acceptance depends on the merchant, card network, offline capability and local rules.

Physical card

Useful for: offline terminals, ATM cash and merchants that do not accept mobile wallets.

Watch: delivery timing, card network, replacement cost and hotel or car-hire holds.

View card details

Digital card

Useful for: online bookings, mobile wallets and reducing exposure of the physical card.

Watch: phone battery, contactless acceptance, wallet compatibility and offline venues.

Check current pricing

Second payment route

Useful for: deposits, outages, a lost phone or a declined transaction.

Watch: separate storage, different issuer and enough available credit or balance.

Plan redundancy

Hotels, car-hire companies and some transport operators may place a large authorisation hold or prefer a credit card. Ask before arrival if the payment is important to your itinerary.

How safe is Wise and what account limits matter?

Wise requires identity and account checks, and its current help centre says personal customers have daily and monthly account spending limits that cover card spending and ATM withdrawals. Limits can also be set at card level and vary by country or region.

Risk Wise preparation Backup
Lost or stolen card Freeze it in the app and review recent transactions. Second card stored separately and emergency cash.
Lost or stolen phone Know how to access the account safely and keep key contact details offline. Physical card, alternate device or trusted contact route.
Verification delay Complete identity checks before ordering or funding the account. Do not make Wise your only travel-money route.
Declined or offline terminal Try chip and PIN, another terminal or a smaller transaction. Cash and another card.
Unexpected fee Read the quote, fee and ATM screen before confirming. Leave a realistic payment buffer.
Large hotel or car-hire hold Ask the provider which card type and available limit it requires. Credit card or a different deposit arrangement.

Security is also about reducing exposure. Keep only the trip money you need in the account, use transaction notifications, protect the email and phone number linked to Wise, and avoid sharing card details unnecessarily.

Why Wise can help on a vegan trip

Wise does not make a restaurant vegan and it does not solve dietary communication. Its value is logistical: you can keep a dedicated food buffer, pay for a supermarket run, buy arrival food, cover a taxi to a better food area and manage multiple currencies without carrying the entire trip budget in cash.

  • Arrival buffer: reserve money for water, a first meal and transport from the airport or station.
  • Supermarket backup: keep enough for shelf-stable food, plant milk, fruit and an easy room meal.
  • Restaurant flexibility: use the card for a planned meal, but confirm vegan status, allergens and cross-contact separately.
  • Offline resilience: save the address and payment details of one fallback food option before leaving Wi-Fi.
  • Shared trips: keep receipts and agree whether food, accommodation and transport are separate budget lines.

How should you prepare Wise before departure?

  1. Confirm eligibility: check that Wise can issue the card in your country and that you understand the destination’s acceptance context.
  2. Complete verification: do it while you have stable internet and access to your identity documents.
  3. Check live limits: review card, ATM, contactless, online and account limits in the app.
  4. Price realistic transactions: test one conversion, one card purchase and one withdrawal scenario.
  5. Order early: allow time for standard delivery, activation and a replacement if needed.
  6. Test the card at home: make a small purchase, confirm notifications and learn how to freeze it.
  7. Separate your backups: carry a second card and emergency cash away from the Wise card.
  8. Plan food access: save one supermarket and one vegan-friendly fallback near your first accommodation.
  9. Save offline details: keep Wise support, accommodation, bank and emergency contacts available without relying on mobile data.

Wise versus a bank card, cash and other travel cards

There is no universal best travel card. Compare the complete cost and resilience of the setup, not only the exchange-rate headline.

Option Best use Main limitation Good backup pairing
Wise Multi-currency spending and visible conversion quotes. Country-specific availability, fees and limits; debit card rather than credit. Credit card and local cash.
Credit card Deposits, larger purchases, rewards or purchase protection. Foreign transaction fees, interest and exchange-rate markups may apply. Wise or a second credit card.
Local bank card Existing relationship, familiar support and possibly strong domestic terms. Foreign fees, ATM costs and less transparent conversion. Wise or cash.
Cash Offline vendors, small markets and emergency food or transport. Loss or theft risk and poor exchange rates at some counters. One card stored separately.
Other travel card A different fee schedule, reward system or local availability. Terms, loading fees, expiry and acceptance vary. Wise plus a credit card.

Wise can be one strong part of a travel-money system. It is a poor only option when a trip depends on hotel deposits, a rental-car hold, large cash withdrawals, premium credit-card protections or a single phone.

Common Wise travel mistakes

  • Assuming fees are global: Wise pricing pages are localized.
  • Choosing home currency at a terminal: merchant-controlled DCC can be more expensive than local-currency charging.
  • Relying on one card: a frozen account, offline terminal, lost phone or network issue can stop access.
  • Ignoring deposits: hotels and car-hire companies may prefer a credit card or place a large authorization hold.
  • Waiting to verify: identity checks and card delivery are easier before a trip.
  • Budgeting only for restaurants: include supermarket food, taxis, water, transit and a fallback meal.
  • Calling the card vegan: Wise is not marketed as a vegan product. If animal-derived materials matter to you, ask about the exact card version, packaging and replacement parts rather than inferring from its colour or photos.

Wise travel review FAQs

Is Wise good for international travel?

It can be useful for multi-currency spending when the card is available in your country and you understand the local fee schedule. Use it alongside a second card and emergency cash.

Does Wise use the mid-market exchange rate?

Wise says it uses the mid-market rate as its benchmark and adds a separate conversion fee. Compare the live quote for your exact currency pair rather than relying on a general percentage.

Is Wise free to use abroad?

Not always. Conversion fees, card delivery, ATM fees, excess-withdrawal charges and ATM-operator surcharges can apply. Local pricing pages matter.

How much cash can I withdraw with Wise?

Your allowance depends on the card-issuing country and account. Wise says current limits appear in the Cards area, and the ATM operator can charge separately.

Should I choose local currency or my home currency?

Choose the local currency at a card terminal or ATM in most situations. Choosing your home currency usually gives the conversion to the merchant or ATM operator.

Can Wise replace a credit card for travel?

No. Wise is a debit-card product and may not provide the same deposit handling, purchase protection, rewards or insurance as a credit card.

Is Wise vegan?

Wise is a financial service, not a product marketed as vegan. If avoiding animal-derived materials matters, ask about the exact card version, packaging and replacement components before describing it as vegan.

Can I use Wise for a hotel or car-hire deposit?

Sometimes, but do not assume a debit card will be accepted for every hold. Ask the provider about card type, available balance, authorisation rules and accepted networks before booking.
